PARROTS AND PALM TREES

This quirky lightweight crepe dress fabric has a small bit of spandex added to give it a tiny bit of stretch. Printed with baby parrots and palm tress it certainly makes me fell like I am on holiday.
Use this dressmaking fabric for a pretty camisole, a floaty dress or a dramatic pair of plazzo pants

WAX PRINT COTTONS

Traditional African wax print cottons are really bright and eye catching. They make wonderful clothes, like my peony dress here. They also make great cushions, bags jacket linings....
We have got an amazing collection of them for you, view the full range here. If you want some inspiration for what to use the Wax Print fabric for take a peek at the Pinterest board I have created for you here.

ME MADE MAY PLEDGE

I am very excited to be joining in with Me Made May this year. In case you don't know what this is hop over to So, Zo... What do you know? blog to find out more about it.
I really wanted to join in last year but with my baby due mid June my wardrobe was already limited to leggings and baggy T shirts I wasn't sure I could cut that down to only me made ones. Especially as I couldn't really fit behind my sewing machine and had only made myself one maternity item, a Megan Nielsen Rie dress. (P.S. Did you hear Megan Nielsen patterns coming back into print - woop woop we are very exited about this here at Fabric Godmother and will have them back in stock as soon as they are available) So here is my pledge...

'I, Josie from Fabric Godmother, sign up as a participant of Me-Made-May '15. I endeavour to wear one handmade item each day for the duration of May 2015'

I know it is not about making loads of new things especially but I will be any way because it is a great excuse to get stuck into some new sewing projects. I am planning another Belcarra this time in an Ikat print crepe de chine. I also fancy a gathered skirt in this navy linen and cotton mix.  I will of course be making a Tilly and the buttons Arielle skirt (available to pre order now on our website) fabric still undecided.

I am also using it as a kick up the bum to start on that pile of mending clogging up the end of my sewing table. I began to tackle this at my first ever sewing Bee (I know I can't believe it I have been sewing for as long as I can remember and have never linked up with fellow sewers in this way) As well as having a good old natter and lovely cake at the Brighton Sewing Bees monthly Sewing Sewcial (try saying that after a couple of G&Ts) I used the evening to unpick broken zips ready to be replaced.

We are planning a holiday to Italy in May as well so it will be a challenge take a hand made wardrobe with me. I always pack my holiday wardrobes in coordinating colours usually navy and white with a bright pop of colour such as orange or pink. Sadly I don't sew this way so my handmade wardrobe is every colour and style under the sun like this Saltspring so it will be an interesting fusion of clothes I pack. It has got me thinking that maybe I should start to plan my sewing into a colour palette *starts planning new pinterest board and future blog post*

Are you joining in MMMay? What are you pledging?

NEW TILLY & THE BUTTONS PATTERN - ARIELLE (WITH FREE SHIPPING)

Ohhh I always get really excited when Tilly starts dropping hints that there is a new pattern in the pipeline. With the latest one she tempted us with a few intriguing shots on Instgram, and finally this week Arielle was revealed.

Arielle is an asymmetric pencil or mini skirt with an adorable button opening to one side. Long darts and a high waistline create a flattering, figure-hugging shape. The unlined version is an ideal project for confident beginners, or take your sewing prowess up a notch by adding the optional luxury lining.

Tilly has kindly added some fabric suggestions to her blog including our very own Laura stretch cotton in black and white - eeeek how adorable would that be?? There is also a pinterest board to inspire you some more.

The pattern will be available form next week but you can pre order yours now so you can be sure you will get it as soon as it come in. And as an added bonus I am offering FREE SHIPPING to the UK when you buy the pattern before the 24th April 2015. Use the code ARIELLESHIP4FREE at the checkout. You can order Arielle here

I'm already planning and pre washing my fabric ready for the patterns to arrive, what will you make yours from?

SWISS DOT COTTON

I love Swiss dot cotton. It has a real naivety to it, the small knots add texture and detail in a subtle way. Being cotton it is ideal for spring and summer, perfect for a shirt or dress or how about some kids clothes?
We have just had 4 lovely colours arrive that are available to buy now from our website.

Pale salmon
Pale blue
Red
Navy
What will you make?

ITS ALL ABOUT THAT BASS! SCUBA SKIRT

Yonks ago when I blogged about my first ever Tilly and the Buttons Coco (still to make the second one but the fabric IS waiting in the wings) a couple of the more observant of you noticed my skirt.
I had also made the Hollyburn by Sewaholic in black scuba fabric.
Sewaholic patterns are designed for pear shaped girls, BIG TICK for me then! This means when ever I have made one of their patterns I have had to do very little alterations to the fit. See my Belcarra and Saltspring.

One of the promises I have made to myself this year is that I must make clothes that I actually wear. How many other people have a wardrobe full of pretty flowery summer dresses but spend their lives wearing black jeans and a Tshirt or jumper?? A good start to this is clothes that not only fit but are designed to suit my body shape. I really learnt my lesson last week when lusting over a simple shift dress in a bright fabric. Those of you who follow me on Instagram will have seen me posting pictures of a Colette Laurel. Now I love the idea of this dress but in reality it just doesn't suit me.
So I have ditched the Laurel (Shame as I do love that painterly fabric, maybe I can turn it into a top or something) with my tail between my legs and am going back to clothes made to suit me.
Back to the Hollyburn, I love this skirt, it has pockets (great to stash your mobile and car keys while dealing with a baby) it took about an hour to make, it is so comfy and actually makes me feel quite smart and did I mention it has pockets? Scuba is the perfect fabric as it has just the right amount of body and swish to it. Being scuba it also means it doesn't need to have the seams finished as it doesn't fray, I didn't even hem this skirt, talk about speedy sewing. If you fancy sewing with scuba but are put off as you have never used it before - don't be it is really easy to cut and sew and all of our scuba is washable at 40 degrees and can take a very cool iron, just don't tumble dry it!
And Tasia if you are reading this PLEASE design me a simple shift dress for a pear shaped fan.

IKAT FABRICS

Ikat fabrics are really popular at the moment. Traditionally from Indonesia and woven with yarns that have been pre dyed to give them their distinctive pattern. It is a skilled and time consuming technique, luckily many modern fabrics are printed instead of using the traditional technique meaning we can all wear the striking designs.

I have started a Pinterest board with some Ikat inspirations for you.
