NEW SCUBA FABRICS

Scuba fabric has had a really big surge over the last year or so. It is an amazing fabric to sew with, it has loads of body so is great for structured garment and it handles really easily. Best of all it doesn't fray so if you are a lazy sewer, like me, no need to finish your edge - bonus!!
I think that scuba works best with simple patterns as the seams can get a bit bulky, check out my Pinterest board for some ideas of you can do with scuba.
Here are our latest scuba fabrics lots of bold patterns and rich colours.

DREAMING ABOUT CHERRY FABRIC

Ever since the latest series of The Great British Sewing Bee I have been dreaming about fabric with cherries on, now I have got some! It is a great cotton poplin at £15 per metre. The questions are do I go black or white and what do I make?
I don't want to go for the classic 50's style flared dress as I think it's a bit too predictable (sorry to anyone who has made one of these or wants to) but I totally think that this fabric deserves bit of retro styling.

After many hours on Pinterest I was struck most by this pictures of Marilyn Monroe looking adorable in a cherry print wrap dress.

Bingo a By Hand London Kim with wrap skirt in the white it is.

But then I thought what about a playsuit? HOW cute would that be? SO maybe I should also make a By Hand London Holly short version in black (assuming the sun will come out properly at some point this year!)

Do you have any plans for sewing this lovely cherry fabric?

Art and fashion collide. The Painterly trend is all about  watercolours, abstract lines and painted smudges. Pretty, bold and very wearable the painterly fashion is not just for your clothes but also for your home.
I have put together a Pinterest board for you to look at with my favourite inspirations and below are some of our beautiful painterly fabrics. Pretty dresses, bold cushions and simple shifts are the way forward with these artistic prints.

AHOY THERE

This warmer weather is making me feel like I'm beside the seaside.... beside the sea! (Oh and I do actually live beside the seaside)
If you fancy getting nautical we have some sea inspired fabrics to whisk you away.
From ditsy anchor prints to an amazing cotton seersucker with a magical synchronised swimmer print.

This pretty ditsy print has just a subtle hint towards the nautical theme, from a distance it looks like a small printed cotton poplin then when  you get up close you can see the detail of the tiny knots, life rings and anchors.

Ahoy cotton poplin comes in seaside colours the dreamy sky blue, then nautical navy and red topped with a white themed print including lighthouses, ships wheels and sailing boats.

VINTAGE DRESS PATTERNS

Eliza M has always delivered wonderful vintage inspired dressmaking patterns. With a belief that vintage patterns were beautiful designs but often difficult for beginners, Eliza M started to design a range of vintage patterns with modern sewers in mind. She recently started working with Rachel Frances the ultra glamorous vintage expert (see her instagram here) and together they have released some new adorable dress patterns. Meet Doris, Joan, Sophia and Bridget...

Bridget is a classic 1950's flared halterneck dress, just asking to be made from a bright floral stretch cotton fabric like Connie.

Doris is a strapless dress with a full skirt, it has PARTY written all over it and would be show stopping in a printed velvet like Jenna.

Joan is the new wiggle pattern that will cling to those curves in all the right places creating a super sexy silhouette make it in the bright Laura polka dot stretch cotton for an even bigger impact.

PRETTY FLORAL STRETCH COTTONS

One of my favourite parts about my job is selecting the fabrics for each season. The ones I look forward to the most are the stretch cottons that we bring in for the spring. These fabrics always have the most beautiful designs on them, lots of florals in bold colours and patterns. Stretch cotton is a fabulous fabric to sew with. It has just enough body that it is ideal for a fit and flare dress or a fitted dress. But equally works well as a jacket or A line skirt. Though my all time favourite use for this type of fabric has to be a simple pair of trousers like the Colette Clovers or Sew over It Ultimate trousers. Pairing these bright trousers with a plain t shirt is as easy as wearing jeans but a lot more fun.

NEW CITRUS LINEN COLOURS

Our cotton and linen mix fabric has been really popular since we launched the website 3 years ago. The mixture of a bit of cotton in the fabric means it looks like linen but handles better with less creasing and more body. I have just introduced some new colours for spring, great bright citrus colours ideal for dresses, tunics, loose jackets, trousers...

1950's INSPIRED FABRIC AND PATTERNS

I adore this 1950's inspired print. It has a really graphic feel to it.
Based on a top quality cotton stretch sateen, this fabric is easy to sew and even easier to wear. The 3% spandex allows for movement (and not so perfect fitting) making it ideal for beginners.
